    What the Ganga Dolphin Knows

    A dolphin lives in the Ganga beside Varanasi — blind, navigating by sound. Most children in the city have never seen it. They should.

    The Invisible Neighbour

    Somewhere in the stretch of the Ganga between Chunar and Varanasi, a dolphin is swimming. Not a sea dolphin — a river dolphin. The South Asian river dolphin, Platanista gangetica, sometimes called the Gangetic dolphin or susu in Hindi, after the sound of its breath when it surfaces.

    It is the national aquatic animal of India. It has lived in these rivers for approximately 30 million years — since before the Himalayas reached their current height, since before the Ganga took its current course. It was here before Varanasi. Before Kashi. Before anyone thought to build anything on these banks.

    Most people who live in Varanasi their entire lives never see it.

    The Gangetic dolphin is functionally blind — its eyes have no lens. Instead it "sees" using echolocation, sending out clicks and reading the echoes. It can detect a fish from 10 metres away in pitch dark.

    Seeing Without Eyes

    The Ganga dolphin is functionally blind. Its eyes have no lens. It can detect the direction of light — enough to tell up from down — but it cannot form images. In the murky, sediment-heavy waters of the Ganga, eyes are almost useless anyway.

    Instead, it sees with sound.

    The dolphin emits a continuous stream of ultrasonic clicks — high-frequency pulses that bounce off objects and return to the dolphin's jaw, which conducts the vibrations to its inner ear. From the timing and pattern of these echoes, the dolphin builds a three-dimensional map of its surroundings. It can detect a fish the size of a finger from several metres away, in water so turbid that a human cannot see their own hand at arm's length.

    This is echolocation — the same principle used by bats, but evolved independently. The dolphin and the bat arrived at the same solution to the same problem through completely separate evolutionary paths. Biologists call this convergent evolution, and it is one of the most elegant demonstrations that natural selection is not random. It is a problem-solving engine.

    The River's Canary

    Miners once carried canaries into coal mines. If the canary died, the air was poisonous. The Ganga dolphin is the Ganga's canary.

    Dolphins need deep pools, clean-enough water to support fish populations, and uninterrupted stretches of river to move between feeding and breeding grounds. When dams fragment the river, dolphins get trapped in isolated segments. When pollution kills fish, dolphins starve. When sand mining destroys riverbed structure, the deep pools that dolphins rest in disappear.

    The population of Gangetic dolphins has declined from an estimated tens of thousands to approximately 2,500–3,500 across their entire range in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In some river systems where they once thrived — the Yamuna, sections of the Son — they have disappeared entirely.

    Where dolphins remain, the river is still functioning. Where they vanish, something fundamental has broken.

    What Lives Here, Now

    The stretch of Ganga near Varanasi still supports a dolphin population. They surface occasionally — a grey curve breaking the brown water, a sharp exhaled breath, then gone. Boatmen see them. Fishermen know their habits. Researchers from Banaras Hindu University have been monitoring them for years.

    They are easier to spot in the early morning, in the quieter stretches between the ghats, where boat traffic is light and the water is calmer. They tend to favour confluences — where a tributary meets the main river — because these areas concentrate fish.

    If you take a boat from Assi Ghat at dawn and stay quiet, you might see one. You probably will not. But knowing it is there — a blind dolphin navigating by sound through the same water that has flowed past this city for millennia — changes how you see the river.

    It is not just water. It is habitat.

    The Lesson

    We teach children about lions, elephants, and tigers. These are important animals. They are also far away from most Indian schoolchildren.

    The Ganga dolphin is right here. It is in the river that flows past Varanasi. It is one of the oldest surviving species of dolphin on Earth. It navigates using a biological sonar system more sophisticated than anything human engineering has produced at comparable scale. And it is telling us, by its declining numbers, that the river needs help.

    A child in Varanasi who knows about the Ganga dolphin understands something that a child who only knows about African elephants does not: that the natural world is not something that exists far away, in documentaries and national parks. It is here. In their river. In their city.

    And it is worth protecting.


    The Gangetic dolphin was declared India's National Aquatic Animal in 2009. The stretch of Ganga between Varanasi and Ballia has been identified as one of the key habitats for the species in Uttar Pradesh.
