Why Birds Sing at Dawn
Every morning near Varanasi, birds sing in a precise order — the same order, every day. The dawn chorus is one of nature's most timed events.

The First Sound
If you wake before dawn in Varanasi — or in any town or village in the Indo-Gangetic plain — and you lie still for a moment before the city starts, you will hear it. The birds.
Not one bird. A sequence. A progression. The koels begin early, their two-note call rising through the dark. Then the mynas. Then the sparrows and babblers. Then the parakeets, loud and argumentative. Then the crows, always last, as if they cannot be bothered to compete.
This is the dawn chorus. It happens every morning. It has happened every morning for millions of years. And it is one of the most studied, least understood phenomena in ornithology.
The dawn chorus begins up to an hour before sunrise. Birds sing more loudly then because cool, humid air carries sound 20 times further than at midday. It is nature's own acoustic design.
Why Dawn?
The simplest question — why do birds sing at dawn and not at noon? — has several answers, and all of them are interesting.
The acoustic hypothesis. In the early morning, air is typically cooler and calmer than during the day. Sound travels farther and with less distortion in still air. A song sung at dawn carries roughly 20 times farther than the same song sung at midday, when thermal turbulence breaks up the signal. If you are a bird trying to broadcast your territory boundaries and your fitness to potential mates, dawn is your optimal broadcast window.
The predation hypothesis. Light at dawn is low. It is too dark to forage efficiently for insects, but light enough that predators — hawks, cats, snakes — are not yet fully active. Singing is risky; it reveals your position. But if you cannot forage anyway, the cost of singing is lower at dawn than at any other time.
The hormone hypothesis. Melatonin — the hormone that regulates sleep — drops sharply in response to the first light. As melatonin falls, testosterone rises in male birds, and testosterone drives singing behaviour. The dawn chorus may simply be the audible consequence of a hormonal cascade triggered by photons hitting the retina.
All three explanations are probably true simultaneously. Biology rarely has single causes.
The Order
The birds do not all start at once. The sequence is remarkably consistent and is determined primarily by eye size.
Birds with larger eyes — relative to their body — can detect lower levels of light. They wake earlier. Robins (in Europe) and koels (in India) have proportionally large eyes and begin singing when it is still effectively dark. Species with smaller eyes start later, as the light increases.
This means the dawn chorus is not just a phenomenon — it is a clock. An experienced birder can estimate the time of morning by which species are singing. Before clocks, before phones, the birds told you how close the sun was.
What a Song Contains
Bird song is not random noise. It is structured communication, and in many species it is learned — not instinct, but culture.
A young songbird hatches with the capacity to sing but not the song itself. It must hear adult males of its species during a critical learning window in the first few months of life. If it does not hear the right song during this window, it will never sing it correctly.
This is remarkably similar to how human children acquire language. There is a biological capacity that requires environmental input during a critical period. Miss the window, and the acquisition is impaired.
Some species have dialects. The great tit populations on one side of a European city sing measurably different songs from those on the other side. White-crowned sparrows in California have regional accents that have been tracked across decades. Songs change over time — new phrases appear, old ones disappear. This is cultural evolution, happening in real time, in animals with brains the size of a shelled peanut.
The Koel and Varanasi
The Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) is the voice of the Indian summer. Its rising, two-note call — ku-OO, ku-OO — is so deeply embedded in Hindi and Urdu poetry that it has become a synonym for longing, for the onset of heat, for the time of year when mangoes ripen and the air itself seems to vibrate.
Kalidasa mentions the koel in the Ritusamhara. Amir Khusrau wrote about it. Mirza Ghalib used it. The bird has been a literary presence in this part of the world for over two thousand years.
What poets heard as longing, biologists hear as a brood parasite's mating strategy. The koel is a nest parasite — it lays its eggs in the nests of crows, and the crow raises the koel chick as its own. The male koel's song is an advertisement: I am here, I am strong, I have survived. The female, listening, evaluates.
Both readings — the poetic and the biological — are true. The bird does not know it is being poetic. The poet does not diminish the bird by listening.
Every Morning, for Free
The dawn chorus requires no equipment, no internet, no subscription. It requires only that a child wake early enough and sit still enough to hear what is already happening.
A child who can identify five birds by their song knows something about the world that most adults have forgotten. They know that the morning is not silent — it is orchestral. They know that the koel calls before the myna, and the myna before the crow. They know that the natural world has a schedule, and it keeps it with more discipline than most schools.
This knowledge costs nothing. It requires no laboratory. It is available to every child in every village, every town, every city in India.
All it requires is listening.
Common dawn chorus species in the Varanasi region include: Asian koel, Indian myna, house sparrow, jungle babbler, rose-ringed parakeet, Indian robin, coppersmith barbet, and house crow. The chorus is most pronounced during the breeding season (February–June).
