What a River Teaches About Time
The Ganga has taught Varanasi about impermanence for millennia. What children learn when they watch a river long enough to see it change.

The Same River, Never the Same
Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher writing around 500 BCE, observed that you cannot step into the same river twice. By the time your foot enters the water a second time, the water has moved on. You are standing in a different river.
The Ganga at Varanasi demonstrates this at a scale that is almost theatrical.
In the dry season — roughly October through May — the river is low, slow, and relatively narrow. The ghats are exposed. Steps that disappear in July are walkable in February. Sandbanks emerge in the middle of the river like temporary islands, and children play on them.
In the monsoon — June through September — the same river rises 10 to 15 metres. The lower ghats vanish. The current accelerates. The brown water carries the sediment of a thousand Himalayan tributaries, and the river becomes a different thing entirely — wider, faster, murkier, and immensely more powerful.
The same stone steps. The same ghats. A completely different river.
Water in the deep ocean can be 1,000 years old — it sank from the surface near the poles long before your grandparents were born. The river and the ocean are part of a cycle with no beginning.
Where the Water Comes From
The Ganga begins as Bhagirathi at the foot of the Gangotri glacier, at an altitude of approximately 3,892 metres in Uttarakhand. By the time it reaches Varanasi — roughly 800 km downstream as the river flows — it has been joined by the Alaknanda, the Mandakini, the Yamuna, the Son, and dozens of smaller tributaries.
The water at Varanasi is not one river. It is the accumulated flow of an entire mountain range. Every drop has a history. Some of it fell as snow on Himalayan peaks six months ago. Some of it seeped through limestone aquifers for years before emerging as a spring. Some of it was monsoon rain three weeks ago, rushing down tributaries swollen beyond their banks.
When you stand at Dashashwamedh Ghat and watch the water move, you are watching the Himalayas flow past.
What the River Carries
A river is not just water. It is a transport system.
The Ganga carries approximately 700 million tonnes of sediment per year — fine silt from the Himalayas, deposited across the plains and the delta. This sediment is what made the Indo-Gangetic plain fertile. It is what built Bangladesh. It is what feeds the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans.
The river also carries dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, potassium — leached from rocks over geological time. These minerals feed phytoplankton, which feed zooplankton, which feed fish, which feed dolphins and birds and the communities of fishermen who have worked these waters for centuries.
And the river carries time.
The sediment at the bottom of the Ganga delta is millions of years old — the compressed, lithified remains of mountains that no longer exist. The water itself cycles: ocean to cloud to rain to river to ocean, in a loop that has been running since the Earth first cooled enough for liquid water to exist, roughly 4 billion years ago.
Every river on Earth is a fragment of this cycle. The Ganga is how it manifests here.
Impermanence as Curriculum
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. People have lived on these banks for approximately 3,000 years. And for all of those years, the river has been teaching the same lesson: nothing stays.
The ghats erode and are rebuilt. The river changes course — archaeological evidence shows the Ganga has occupied several different channels in this region over the past few thousand years. Temples are built, submerged, rebuilt. The cremation ghats at Manikarnika have been burning for centuries — the oldest continuous ritual fire in the city — and the ash goes into the river and becomes sediment and eventually becomes stone.
This is not sad. It is physics. It is geology. It is the way the Earth works.
And it is, we would argue, one of the most important things a child can understand. Not as a philosophical abstraction — but as an observable, measurable, physical reality.
A child who understands that the river is not the same from one moment to the next understands something about change that no motivational poster can teach. They understand that change is not an interruption of the normal order — it is the normal order. That stability is something we create temporarily, within a flow that never stops.
The School on the Bank
Varanasi has always been a city of learning. The tradition of gurukula — the teacher's household as a place of study — predates formal schooling by millennia. Students came to Kashi to learn Sanskrit, logic, astronomy, philosophy, and the Vedas. They came because the teachers were here. And the teachers were here because the river was here.
The river does not lecture. It demonstrates. It does not assign homework. It changes, and you either pay attention or you do not.
We are trying to build a school that learns from the river. That understands impermanence not as a threat but as the fundamental condition of being alive. That teaches children to watch, to measure, to record, and to remain curious in the face of constant change.
Because the river will keep flowing whether we pay attention or not.
But a child who pays attention will see more than water.
The Ganga's total length from Gangotri to the Bay of Bengal is approximately 2,525 km. It drains a basin of 1,086,000 sq km and supports a population of over 400 million people — the most densely populated river basin on Earth.
