Why the Night Sky is the Greatest Classroom
Before books, before curriculum — there was the sky. At our CBSE school in Varanasi, we teach children to look up and wonder.

The Oldest School
Before there were buildings, before there were books, before there was curriculum — there was the sky. The Rig Veda was composed by people who spent their nights watching stars. Galileo built his telescope because the sky asked questions no one could answer from the ground. Every civilization that has ever existed has been shaped by what they saw when they looked up.
So why do we teach children to look down?
Did you know? The Milky Way contains over 200 billion stars — and on a clear night, you can see about 5,000 of them with your naked eye from a dark field.
What Happens When a Child Sees the Milky Way
There is a specific kind of silence that falls over a child the first time they see the Milky Way with naked eyes. It is not the silence of boredom or fear. It is the silence of awe — the moment the brain receives information so vast it temporarily suspends chatter.
That silence is the beginning of learning.
In that moment, the child is not performing intelligence. They are experiencing it. The universe has handed them a question so large that no multiple-choice answer can contain it: what is all of this?
Did you know? The VLT's lasers excite sodium atoms 90 km up in the mesosphere, creating artificial stars — bright enough to guide adaptive optics systems that cancel atmospheric blur in real time.
The Cosmic Scale Problem
One of the most important things education can give a child is a true sense of scale. Not just mathematical scale — but felt scale. The kind that changes how you move through the world.
When a child understands that:
- The sun is a million times the volume of the Earth
- The nearest star is 4.2 light years away — meaning light, moving at 300,000 km per second, takes 4.2 years to get there
- The observable universe contains roughly 2 trillion galaxies
...something shifts. Petty anxieties shrink. The urgency to be right all the time softens. And in its place — curiosity.
And curiosity, not compliance, is what drives a life of learning.
What We Are Building
At Akshararambh, we are working toward nights where students lie on the school grounds and name constellations. Where the astronomy lab isn't a classroom with posters — it's a field with a telescope, pointed at Jupiter's moons.
Because the greatest thing we can teach a child is not that they must master the universe. It is that they are part of it.
And that is worth waking up for.
